What an emergency visit covers
The first job is to stop the damage: closing a supply line, capping a broken pipe or clearing the blockage that is pushing water back. The permanent repair is often a second visit with its own price and, in some cities, its own permit.
Ask for the call-out charge and the hourly rate before the truck leaves, since the hourly figure on this page leaves the call-out out.
Emergency plumbing labor in Florida, by the hour
Emergency labor comes to $80 to $390 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee on our model, built from 2 national published ranges and adjusted to Florida pay. It is an estimate, not a quote, and no permit fee is included because the permit depends on the work.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $80 to $390 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the Florida plumber wage ratio (0.78). Four Florida plumbing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. Basis: no state company sample (no counted Florida company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Plumber wage, Florida mean | $26.94 an hour | BLS May 2025 average hourly pay of a Florida plumber, which is wages paid and not an invoice rate. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (2 sources), adjusted by Florida's plumber wage ratio to the US (0.78, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. Four Florida plumbing companies publish a price we could count on their own websites; where five or more price the same job, the range is the middle half of their prices, and where two to four do, the estimate is widened to take them in. Coupons, specials and figures a page gives as an average are not counted. We have no counted Florida company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. What to check on the company before it starts
The DBPR portal at myfloridalicense.com searches by name, license number, city, county or license type, and the Customer Contact Center answers at 850.487.1395. A plumbing contractor is certified (CF, statewide) or registered (RF, named jurisdictions only).
Contracting without either is a first-degree misdemeanor, and a repeat offense or one during a Governor-declared state of emergency is a third-degree felony (489.127). A contractor without either can't enforce the contract or file a lien (489.128).
When to call without waiting
- A pipe is spraying and the main valve does not stop it.
- Sewage is coming up through a floor drain or the lowest toilet.
- Water is running over the electrical panel or through a light fixture.
- You smell gas at the water heater or the stove.
- A dripping faucet or a toilet that keeps running.
- A slow drain in one sink that still empties.
Run through these before you touch a valve or a wrench.
- Is water running that you can't stop at the main valve?
- Is sewage coming up through a drain or toilet, or can you smell it?
- Is water reaching the electrical panel, or is a ceiling sagging or dripping?
- Smell gas near the water heater or another gas appliance? Get out of the house first; only then, standing outside, call 911 and your gas utility.
- Is it one fixture, or the whole house?
Answering yes to any of the first four makes it an emergency, so shut the main valve if you can reach it, get out if you smell gas, and send the form with Emergency ticked.
In the first ten minutes
- Close the main water valve, usually at the meter box or where the line enters the house.
- Open a low faucet to drain the pipes and turn off the water heater's power or gas.
- Move rugs and electronics away from the water and keep clear of wet outlets.
- Photograph the damage and write down the time you noticed it.
Do emergency repairs need a permit?
Permits come from the city or county building department, not the state (553.79). The statute requires one before repairing a building, and the department decides how emergency work is handled, so ask it about after-hours repairs.
Section 553.79(1)(b) requires each department to post its permit types and accept applications electronically, which means you can look up the list on its website.
Before any work starts, ask for the company's plumbing contractor license number and search it on DBPR's license search.
Questions people ask
How do I check an emergency plumber in Florida?
Search the company on the DBPR license portal. You can search it by company name or license number, and DBPR's Customer Contact Center takes calls at 850.487.1395.
What does an emergency plumber cost in Florida?
$80 to $390 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee on our model, before any call-out charge. That's labor only. Ask for the call-out charge on the phone, before the truck is sent.
Can someone without a certificate or registration do emergency plumbing in Florida?
Not for pay; that contractor can't enforce the contract. Section 489.127 makes contracting without a certificate or registration a crime, and 489.128 bars that contractor from enforcing the contract or filing a lien.
Who do I call for a gas smell?
911 from outside, then the gas company's 24-hour line. Peoples Gas (TECO) gives (877) 832-6747 as its 24/7 line, and Florida City Gas gives 800.993.7546 for leaks and odors.
Can I cancel a repair contract signed at my door?
A home solicitation sale carries a three-business-day right to cancel. Section 501.031 sets the right for home solicitation sale agreements and requires a conspicuous notice of it. Ask the company whether a job you phoned in counts as a home solicitation sale.
