Sewer line repair · Florida

Is it one broken spot in the sewer pipe, or the whole run?

Short answer

A camera recording decides between a spot repair and a new lateral. Our estimate for a spot repair is $935 to $3,250 per spot repair or short section, permit included, an estimate and not a quote. Before a company digs, ask your utility where its responsibility for the pipe ends.

One repaired section, or a whole new pipe to the main

A spot repair digs to one broken or cracked section and replaces it. A lateral replacement runs a new pipe from the house to the main, and the price follows its length, so we show about 40 feet and about 80 feet.

Slow drains in every fixture, gurgling and a wet patch along the pipe's path are the signs to ask for a camera run before any digging, and a first cleaning is described on the drain cleaning page.

One section, or the whole run?

The camera recording sets the scope. One localized break supports a spot repair, while damage along the length or repeated failures in the same pipe support pricing a replacement beside it.

Usually a repair
  • The recording shows one break with sound pipe on both sides.
  • The pipe has failed once, in one spot.
Usually a replacement
  • Damage runs along most of the pipe.
  • Breaks show up at two or more points on the run.
  • Roots or offsets return after each repair.

Who maintains the pipe between the house and the main

None of the Florida city pages this site draws on says where the homeowner's share of a sewer lateral ends, so ask your city's utility department, in writing, before anyone digs in the street or parkway.

Tallahassee's schedule, headed as effective October 1, 2026, lists a sewer replacement at a $70.07 application plus $41.60. A sewer service inspection carries the same two amounts.

Who may be paid to replace it

The CILB category page lists sanitary and storm drainage and sewer lines among a plumbing contractor's work. The company needs a DBPR certificate or registration, and the DBPR portal searches either by name or license number.

Permit lines differ by city: Lakeland lists $31.50 for a sewer connection, Coral Springs $154.00 for a sewer hook-up and Miami Gardens $78.55 for sewer capping or demolition.

Before anyone digs

Sunshine 811 takes the notice, and section 556.105(1)(a) requires it at least two full business days before digging, ten for work beneath state waters. Operators mark their underground lines within 24 inches within two full business days of the notice.

The numbers are 811 and (800) 432-4770.

Sewer signs that mean call now

Call right away
  • Sewage rises in the lowest drain and a plunger does nothing.
  • Every fixture backs up together and the floor drain gurgles.
  • Part of the yard along the pipe's route has sunk or turned wet.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A drain that was slow, cleared and has stayed clear.
  • A planned lateral replacement you are comparing prices for.

Before you call

  1. Note which fixtures back up, and whether the lowest drain is the first to fill.
  2. Find the cleanout, a capped pipe near the house, and keep it clear.
  3. Ask for a camera inspection with a recording before you agree to digging.
  4. Ask your utility where its responsibility for the pipe ends, and write down the answer.

Does a sewer repair need a permit in Florida?

Section 553.79(1)(a) requires a permit before altering or repairing a building, and cities print sewer lines on their schedules, such as Tallahassee's sewer replacement and Coral Springs' sewer hook-up. The $7,500 exemption for single-family homes excludes plumbing work.

Ask the department for your address whether a spot repair in the yard is permitted work.

Before any work starts, ask for the company's plumbing contractor license number and search it on DBPR's license search.
