Gas line · Florida

Do you smell gas, or are you adding a line for an appliance?

Short answer

Gas lines fall within the work of a plumbing contractor under the CILB's category page, and cities print gas permit charges of their own: Tampa lists $162.00 for natural and LP gas piping and Hernando County $140.00. Our estimate is $375 to $1,225 per job, with a typical plumbing permit counted in, and an estimate is not a quote.

What a gas line job involves

New work runs a line from the meter, or from an LP tank, to a range, dryer, heater or grill. A repair replaces a failed fitting, flex connector or valve and is followed by a pressure test.

A gas smell is a different call: the emergency box on this page has the numbers.

Digging near or for a gas line

Section 556.105(1)(a) requires an excavator to notify Sunshine 811 at least two full business days before digging, and operators mark their lines within 24 inches of the facility within two full business days after the notice. Call 811 or (800) 432-4770.

Work beneath state waters needs ten full business days.

Gas odor comes first

Call right away
  • Gas odor anywhere in the house means go outside first.
  • A digging tool hit a buried gas pipe.
Can usually wait for a normal appointment
  • A planned new line for a range, dryer or grill, with no gas smell anywhere.
Get everyone out, call 911, then the 24-hour line: (877) 832-6747 for TECO Peoples Gas, 800.993.7546 for Florida City Gas. Your street decides which company you have.

Before you call

  1. Write down each appliance, its BTU rating and where it will sit, so a company can size the line.
  2. Find your gas meter or LP tank, and note how far it is from each appliance.
  3. Ask whether the price includes the permit and the pressure test.
  4. Plan the dig route and ask who will call 811, which needs two full business days.

Is a gas line permit-free in Florida?

Section 553.79 puts permits with the local department, and the $7,500 exemption for single-family homes excludes gas work.

Ask your department for its gas permit charge before a company quotes, since Tampa's, Hernando County's and Coral Springs' amounts differ.

Before any work starts, ask for the company's plumbing contractor license number and search it on DBPR's license search.
