Short answer

Our estimate for drain cleaning in Michigan is $160 to $375 per job, a model and not a quote. Five Michigan plumbing companies publish drain cleaning prices on their own websites, and they run from $99 to $300, with a median of about $210 (read Oct 19, 2026). These are published prices, not quotes, and the $99 figures are per-drain or coupon prices. A clog on one fixture and a blocked main line are different jobs, and the price follows the job.

Where the numbers come from

Most drain cleaning cost pages copy one another, so here is where our numbers come from. On Oct 19, 2026 we read the prices that Michigan plumbing companies publish on their own websites, and five of them published a drain cleaning figure we could use. Each company counts once, and each price is the company’s own wording on its own page, which makes it neither a quote nor an average of what people paid.

The rest of the method is the paragraph on the editorial policy page. It describes the estimate: national published ranges, adjusted for what Michigan plumbers are paid, with the prices Michigan companies publish shown in their own rows. Drain cleaning has five Michigan companies behind it, and so has the service-call fee.

What plumbers are paid in Michigan

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2025 figures for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters show a Michigan mean wage of $37.14 an hour. In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area the mean is $39.28, in Grand Rapids-Kentwood $36.76, and in Lansing-East Lansing $35.64. A mean wage is paid to a person and leaves out the truck, the cable machine, insurance, the office and the company’s margin, so it is background and not a rate you will be charged.

The difference between a clog and a line problem

One slow sink, several fixtures slowing together, and the lowest drain in the house backing up are three different jobs. The clog severity ladder asks three questions and sorts you onto the right rung before you pick up the phone, which matters because a fixture clog and a main-line clog are priced separately.

When the blockage is in the lateral, the pipe leaving the house, ownership matters. Traverse City, for example, maintains sewer mains in the streets and easements and says property owners maintain their own lateral, including the connection to the public main. Policies vary by municipality, so ask yours where the public sewer starts; sewer line repair takes that further.

What Michigan companies publish for drain cleaning

Five Michigan plumbing companies publish a drain cleaning price: $99 at the low end, $300 at the high end, and a median of about $210 when each company’s midpoint is compared. Read Oct 19, 2026.

Company (area) What it publishes Type of price
Thornton & Grooms (Farmington Hills) $99 per drain Flat price, with no charge if flow is not restored
Bison Plumbing (Warren) $99 plus a service charge Coupon, charge amount not stated
Thompson Trenchless (Wyandotte) $150 to $300 for basic snaking Typical range
Mr. Rooter (Detroit, Flint and Saginaw pages) $150 to $271 for simple snaking Typical range, one company across three franchise pages
Drain Monkeys (Kalamazoo, Portage, Gobles) $195 to $230 for the first hour Billed by time

Read the floors with care. The two $99 figures are per-drain or coupon prices, and the typical ranges run from $150 to $300. Hydro jetting is priced separately, at $300 to $600 at one company and $900 to $1,300 at another. None of this is a quote for your house, and a figure far outside the table is a reason to ask what the job includes.

Service-call fees are the other number to compare. Five Michigan companies publish a visit, trip or diagnostic fee, and together they run from free to about $100: a trip charge of $55 to $85 at one, diagnostics of $59 to $89 at another, a $99 coupon at a third, and one company that says it charges nothing for the visit. Definitions differ, and some fees come off the repair price, so ask whether yours does.

Permits and licensing for clearing a drain

Michigan law works in your favor here. Under LARA’s rule, a plumbing permit is not required for repairs involving only the working parts of a faucet or valve, or for clearance of stoppages, as long as no alterations are made in the existing piping or fixtures. Portage’s permit FAQ says much the same thing in its own words: no permit for clearing stoppages or repairing leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures, and none for removing and reinstalling toilets, provided no valves, pipes or fixtures are replaced or rearranged.

The licensing act has a matching exemption. Minor repair work is exempt, and the act defines minor repair as clearance of stoppages, repair or replacement of a faucet or valve, or reinstalling the same fixture, with no modification to the plumbing system. Two details change the picture. A camera inspection that finds a cracked line leads to a repair, and a repair that replaces pipe is permit work. And digging to reach a lateral is excavation: MISS DIG says to contact them before you dig, and a summary of the statute puts that notice at least three business days ahead. That timing comes from a secondary summary, so confirm it with MISS DIG at 811.

What changes the price

The published prices above do not split out what moves a price, so each factor is a question to ask and not a number. Distance matters, since a fixture trap and the main line near the street sit at different distances from the cleanout, and so does whether there is a cleanout at all, because access decides how fast the work goes. A cable, a jetter and a camera are different pieces of equipment that plumbers price differently, so ask which one is being used and why. After-hours work is priced differently by every company, so ask before you agree. Finally, ask whether a return visit within a stated period is covered if the clog comes back, and get the answer in writing.

For a longer list of questions to ask before work begins, how to find a licensed plumber in Michigan goes through the contract and the license check.

When the drain is a sign of something else

Repeat clogs, a lowest-floor drain that backs up, and a backup that appears only after heavy rain all point away from a simple stoppage. The last has its own causes, including footing drains and sump connections, which our guide on sewer backup after heavy rain covers. If a camera shows a failed line, the figures change completely, and main sewer line replacement cost is the next stop. The drain cleaning page describes the work itself.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to clean a main sewer line?

Two of the five Michigan companies we read publish a main-line figure: Mr. Rooter lists main sewer line cleaning at $150 to $292, and Thompson Trenchless lists main line snaking at $250 to $400. That is two companies, too few to call a range, and these are published prices, not quotes.

Do I need a permit to have a drain cleared in Michigan?

Usually not, because the state's permit exemption covers clearing stoppages. The exemption holds only if nothing is altered in the existing piping or fixtures.

Does a drain cleaner have to be a licensed plumber in Michigan?

Clearing a stoppage is within what Michigan's licensing act calls minor repair, which is exempt from the license requirement. Cutting into or replacing pipe is not, so a camera finding that leads to a repair is a licensed plumber's job.

Is a plumber's hourly rate what I will pay per hour?

Not always. Only one of the five Michigan drain cleaning companies we read bills by time (Drain Monkeys, $195 to $230 for the first hour); the rest publish a price per job. The Michigan mean wage of $37.14 an hour is what plumbers are paid, and a company's charge includes its own costs. Ask for the call-out fee, the rate and what is included before the work starts.

When is a clog really a sewer problem?

When several drains slow at once or the lowest drain in the house backs up, the blockage is probably past the branches. A backup that appears only after heavy rain has other causes, covered in our sewer backup guide.
