Cable, hydro jet or camera: what each one is for
A cable machine pushes a rotating steel cable with a cutting head through the pipe until it breaks through the blockage. It is the usual first move for a stoppage at one fixture or on a branch line. It opens the pipe but does not scrub the wall of it.
Hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour the inside of the pipe, which is why it comes up for grease or a line that keeps clogging. A camera on a push rod shows what is in the pipe and where. Ask to see the footage; it is the only way to tell a clog from a damaged pipe.
Drain cleaning costs in Michigan: our estimate and what companies publish
Our estimate for clearing a drain in Michigan is $160 to $375 per job. It is a model, not a quote: national published ranges adjusted for what Michigan plumbers are paid, with no permit added because clearing a stoppage needs none. Five Michigan companies publish their own drain cleaning prices, shown in the next row. The drain cleaning cost guide explains what moves the price.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $160 to $375 per job | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan plumber wage ratio (1.07). Michigan company prices are shown separately. |
| Published prices from 5 Michigan plumbing companies, collected Oct 19, 2026 | $99 to $300; median of company midpoints about $210 | Prices the companies publish on their own pages, not quotes. The $99 floors are per-drain or coupon prices; the typical ranges run $150 to $300. Hydro jetting is priced separately. |
| Diagnostic or service-call fee, 5 Michigan plumbing companies, collected Oct 19, 2026 | Free to about $100 | Definitions differ: a free visit, trip charges of $55 to $85, and $59 to $99 diagnostics or coupons. Some are credited to the repair. Published prices, not quotes. |
| Plumber wage, Michigan mean | $37.14 an hour | What Michigan plumbers are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |

Clean the line, or fix the pipe
Cleaning treats the symptom. If a camera shows a line that is intact, cleaning again is the right call. If it shows a crack, an offset joint or a collapsed section, further cleaning only delays the repair, and the next quote is for sewer line repair. In Detroit, where 90.1% of homes were built before 1980, and in Saginaw, where 92.8% were, an old house is a reason to ask for the camera sooner, though the age of the house alone does not tell you what is in the pipe.
- The camera shows an intact line and a plug of hair, grease or paper.
- One fixture is slow and the rest are fine.
- The camera shows a crack, offset or collapsed section.
- The same line backs up repeatedly after cleaning.
- There is a wet spot in the yard or a sewer smell outside.
How to tell a clog from a broken pipe before you pay
One slow sink with everything else draining points to a local clog. A toilet that gurgles when the tub drains suggests a shared branch or the main, and a floor drain that backs up suggests the main line. If the same drain clogs every few months, ask for a camera before another cabling. The clog severity ladder walks you through these rungs.
A backup that only happens after heavy rain may not be a clog at all, and cleaning may not stop it. The State of Michigan's flood guidance suggests sump pumps and sewer backflow valves. See sewer line repair and the sewer backup guide.
Who owns the pipe between your house and the street
Traverse City, for example, maintains the sewer mains and says property owners maintain their own lateral, including the connection to the main. Other municipalities draw that line elsewhere, so ask yours. If a camera shows the problem is in the lateral, that is repair work, and digging needs a MISS DIG 811 notice first: the statute says at least 72 hours excluding non-business hours, which MISS DIG describes as 3 business days. Confirm the timing with MISS DIG.
Blocked drains that cannot wait
- Sewage is coming up through a floor drain, tub or toilet.
- Every fixture in the house is backing up, not one.
- Water from a backup is spreading toward the electrical panel.
- One slow sink or tub with everything else draining.
- A toilet that clears with a plunger.
What to try before you call
- Pull the stopper and clear hair by hand from a bathroom sink or tub.
- Plunge with a cup plunger on a sink or a flange plunger on a toilet, with the overflow blocked.
- Put a bucket under the trap and remove the trap under a sink to check for a plug.
- If two or more fixtures are slow, stop. That points past the fixture and is a job for a cable machine.
Permit rules for clearing a drain in Michigan
Clearing a stoppage is one of two things Michigan's plumbing permit rule exempts, along with repairing the working parts of a faucet or valve, as long as the existing piping and fixtures are not altered. LARA's page reached us as a search result, so check with your building department. Portage says the same: no permit for clearing stoppages or repairing leaks, provided nothing is replaced or rearranged.
The line is crossed when the work cuts into pipe. Replacing a section needs a permit, and only a licensed master or journey plumber may do plumbing under MCL 339.6107. Check any license on the LARA lookup. The homeowner permit guide lists the other exemptions.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Clog severity ladder
A slow sink and a backed-up basement floor drain are different jobs. Answer two questions and the ladder shows which rung you are on, what to try first, and when to stop trying. It runs in your browser and asks for nothing.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
How do you clean a sink drain?
Start by hand: remove the stopper, clear hair, then plunge or remove the trap under a bucket. Clearing a stoppage like this needs no permit in Michigan. If the water still will not leave, the blockage is past the trap and you want a cable machine.
How much does it cost to clean a main sewer line in Michigan?
A main line clog costs more than a sink drain in the national ranges we read, and our estimate for drain cleaning in general is $160 to $375 per job, a model and not a quote. Ask for the price of the cleaning and the camera together, and ask whether the cleanout is accessible.
Does drain cleaning need a permit in Michigan?
Clearing a stoppage does not, provided no piping or fixtures are altered. That is the state's exemption. Replacing any piping does need a permit, and only a licensed plumber may do that work.
Why does my drain back up only when it rains?
A backup that only appears in storms may not be a household clog. Cleaning the line will not change that; the state's flood guidance points to sump pumps and sewer backflow valves. See sump pump repair and the sewer backup guide.
Does homeowner's insurance cover a sewer backup?
Not automatically. Michigan's insurance regulator says water and sewer backup is not automatically covered under a homeowners or renters policy, so ask your agent before damage happens. If you have damage, tell the insurer it is water damage, because sewer backup or a failing sump pump may be covered.
