What a plumber does with a frozen, burst or leaking pipe
The plumber stops the water, finds where it is escaping and decides whether the pipe can be patched or a section has to come out. A visible drip under a sink is quick. A leak inside a wall or under a slab takes longer, because the first job is finding it, and the repair may mean opening finished surfaces. Ask who restores the drywall before the work starts, since that is often a separate bill.
If a frozen pipe has not burst yet, the plumber thaws it and then looks for the reason it froze, such as an air leak or a missing section of insulation. Nobody can promise that a thawed pipe is undamaged, since cracks can open as the ice melts, so watch for drips in the days afterward.
- Shut the main water valve and open the faucets to drain the lines.
- Locate the break or the frozen section and note how far the damage runs.
- Repair or replace the section, restore water and test every joint.
- Talk through why it failed, and what to change before the next cold snap.
Leak and burst pipe repair costs in Michigan: estimates
Our estimate for a leak repair in Michigan is $160 to $640 per repair. It is a model, not a quote, built from national published ranges and adjusted for what Michigan plumbers are paid. It covers an accessible pipe or fixture leak; a slab leak or a main line leak is a different job and is not in that figure. One Michigan company publishes a pipe leak repair price, shown in its own row. The State of Michigan, citing a severe weather committee, says an eighth-inch crack can leak up to 250 gallons a day, so the repair is rarely the biggest bill and the water damage is.

Where Michigan's 42-inch number comes from
You will see 42 inches quoted as Michigan's frost line. The number is real, and it comes from rule R 408.30522, which says exterior footings and foundations must extend 42 inches below grade. It is not a rule for burying water pipes, and the building official may change the depth for site conditions. The pipes that freeze in practice are usually not buried ones: the State's MiReady page says pipes in crawl spaces and attics are most susceptible.
MiReady also says to insulate those pipes, seal air leaks near them, and disconnect hoses and drain outdoor faucet lines. Heat tape should be one tested by an independent lab such as UL, and if you are away in winter, keep the thermostat at 55 degrees or higher. Our full guide is frozen pipes in Michigan.
Leaks that cannot wait
- A pipe that has burst and a main valve you cannot close.
- Water running near the electrical panel or through a ceiling.
- No water from any tap in a hard freeze, with a frozen pipe you cannot reach.
- A slow drip at a fixture. Close the stop valve under the sink and book a normal visit.
- One tap that trickles when others run fine, once you have checked it for frost.
While you wait for the plumber
- Shut off the water at the main. If you do not know where it is, the know your shutoff tool helps.
- Open the faucet the frozen pipe feeds, then warm the pipe with a hair dryer starting nearest the faucet. Never use a torch or open flame.
- If nothing comes out of a tap and you cannot find the frozen section, stop and call a plumber.
- Photograph the damage. DIFS says to tell your insurer there is water damage rather than only saying flood.
Permit rules when a leak means new pipe
Stopping a leak needs no permit, according to Portage's plumbing FAQ, but if a hidden pipe fails and must be replaced with new material, that counts as new work and does need one. Michigan's definition of minor repair (MCL 339.6103) covers only clearing stoppages, repairing or replacing a faucet or valve, or reinstalling the same fixture, with no change to the plumbing system.
Anything beyond that takes a licensed plumber. Check the license on LARA's lookup, even in an emergency. Our guide to what needs a permit goes through the cases.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Know your shutoff
The first useful thing to do in a plumbing emergency is to stop the water, and the worst time to learn where the valve is is during one. Pick the situation and read the steps. Test the valve on a calm day, and tell everyone in the house where it is.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Should I call a plumber for a frozen pipe?
Yes, if you cannot find or reach the frozen section, or nothing comes out after you try to thaw it. MiReady says to call a plumber in that case.
How do I thaw a frozen pipe safely?
Shut off the main, open the faucet and warm the pipe with a hair dryer starting near the faucet. Never use a torch or any open flame.
Is 42 inches the depth my water line must be buried?
No, 42 inches is the footing and foundation depth in rule R 408.30522. We found no Michigan source for pipe burial depth.
How much does a plumber charge per hour in Michigan?
Our estimate for plumbing labor on an emergency call is $105 to $535 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee, and it is a model, not a quote. BLS puts the Michigan mean wage at $37.14 an hour, but that is what plumbers earn, not what you pay. See what Michigan plumbers charge.
Does a leak repair need a permit?
Stopping a leak does not, but replacing a failed hidden pipe can. Portage treats that as new work needing a permit, and rules vary by city.
Will insurance cover a burst pipe?
That depends on your policy, and we cannot answer it for you. DIFS says to describe the damage as water damage rather than just flood, since some causes may be covered. Call your agent.
How common are frozen pipe losses in Michigan?
The State says a severe weather committee estimates a quarter-million homes are damaged each winter. That page is undated, so treat the figure as old.
