What an emergency plumber does when they arrive
The plumber's first job is to stop the damage. Expect them to close the right valve and make the leak or blockage safe, then explain what the permanent fix involves and what it costs. The price gets set in that second conversation, so do not feel rushed into signing before you have heard it.
Before the work starts, ask for the call-out fee, the hourly rate after that, and whether the call-out fee is credited against the repair. Ask for the plumber's Michigan license number too, and look it up on the LARA license lookup while they travel.
Emergency plumber costs in Michigan: our estimate and what companies publish
Our estimate for an emergency plumber in Michigan is $105 to $535 per hour of labor, before any call-out fee. It is a model, not a quote: it starts from national published hourly ranges and adjusts them for what Michigan plumbers are paid. Michigan companies that publish a service-call fee are shown in their own row, and the hourly rate guide explains why a wage is not a rate.

Frozen pipes and spring flooding drive Michigan emergencies
Michigan's emergencies follow the weather. In winter the State's winter preparedness page says pipes in crawl spaces and attics freeze first, and tells you to shut off the water at the main if one does; the frozen pipes guide covers thawing and what to photograph.
Spring and big storms bring water from below. The National Weather Service recorded 3 to 5 inches of rain across Metro Detroit on June 25 to 27, 2021, with flooded basements reported mainly in Wayne and Washtenaw counties. Work out whether yours is a failed sump pump or a sewer backup, since the plumber and the insurance question differ; the sewer backup guide walks through both. In Detroit, where 90.1% of homes were built before 1980, find your shutoff before you need it with the Know your shutoff tool.
What counts as an emergency, and who to call first
- Water is flowing from a pipe and you cannot stop it at the main.
- Sewage is coming up through a floor drain, tub or toilet.
- Water is near the electrical panel, or a ceiling is sagging with water above it.
- A pipe has split after a freeze and the water is on.
- A dripping faucet you can isolate with its own stop valve.
- A single slow drain with everything else working.
- A running toilet.
Answer these before anything else. They take about ten seconds.
- Is water running that you cannot stop at the main valve?
- Is sewage coming up through a drain or toilet, or can you smell it?
- Is water reaching the electrical panel, or is a ceiling sagging or dripping?
- Do you smell gas near the water heater or a gas appliance? Leave the house, then call 911 and your gas utility from outside: DTE (800) 947-5000, Consumers Energy 800-477-5050.
- Is it one fixture, or the whole house?
Yes to any of the first four: this is an emergency. Shut the main valve if you can reach it, leave the house if you smell gas, and use the form with Emergency ticked.
What to do in the first ten minutes
- Shut off the main water valve. The state's frozen pipe advice says to do this first.
- Open a faucet at the lowest point to drain the line, then check that the water heater is not firing into an empty tank.
- Move anything that can be damaged, and stay out of standing water if it could reach an outlet.
- Photograph the damage before you clean up, and tell your insurer it is water damage rather than just flooding, as the state insurance regulator suggests; sewer backup or a failing sump pump may be covered.
- Never use a torch or open flame to thaw a pipe.
Licensing, permits and your rights in an emergency
Michigan requires a license to work as a plumbing contractor, master, journey or apprentice plumber, and only a licensed master or journey plumber may do the plumbing itself (MCL 339.6107). Practising without a license is a misdemeanor under MCL 339.5601, with fines up to $500 or up to 90 days. Check a license on the LARA lookup.
Plumbing work needs a permit before it starts, and the state exempts only repairs to the working parts of a faucet or valve and clearing stoppages without altering the piping; LARA's page reached us through a search summary, so confirm the wording locally. A replacement water heater is not in that exemption, and Sterling Heights says in its FAQ that you need a permit for one.
One rule is often misquoted. The three business day cancellation right in MCL 445.112 covers home solicitation sales, where a seller approached you. It does not cover you phoning a plumber, and it has an emergency exception. Complaints about unlicensed work go to LARA's enforcement section.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Know your shutoff
The first useful thing to do in a plumbing emergency is to stop the water, and the worst time to learn where the valve is is during one. Pick the situation and read the steps. Test the valve on a calm day, and tell everyone in the house where it is.

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Michigan?
Our estimate is $105 to $535 an hour of labor, before any call-out fee, and it is a model, not a quote. It is built from national published ranges and adjusted for Michigan's plumber wage ratio. Michigan plumbers are paid a mean of $37.14 an hour (BLS, May 2025), which is a wage rather than a rate, so do not multiply it by hours. Ask for the call-out fee, the hourly rate and what the call-out fee covers before work starts.
How do I spot a dodgy plumber?
Ask for a Michigan license number and check it on LARA before they start. Working without a license is a misdemeanor under MCL 339.5601. A written contract for work on a house should say a plumbing contractor must be licensed and give the license number (MCL 570.1114). The Attorney General's office mediates informally if a dispute follows.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house, then call 911 and your gas utility from a safe place. DTE's gas leak hotline is (800) 947-5000 and Consumers Energy's is 800-477-5050. Do not try to find the leak, and do not use switches, phones or a flame inside. Call a plumber only after responders or the utility say it is safe.
Does the three-day cancellation rule apply if I call a plumber in an emergency?
No, not in the usual case. MCL 445.112 covers home solicitation sales, where the seller approached you, and it has an exception for emergencies. Read any contract before you sign it and do not rely on a cancellation right you may not have.
Does your site send a plumber?
No, we are a referral service and not a plumbing company. We pass your request to one independent company that serves your ZIP, and that company sets its own price and does the work. How that works and how we are paid is on the how it works page.
