What a plumber does on a sump pump call
A sump pump sits in a pit in the basement floor and pushes groundwater out through a discharge pipe before it reaches the floor. A repair call starts by finding which part of that chain has stopped: the plumber pours water into the pit, watches the float lift, listens for the motor, then follows the discharge line outside to see where the water goes.
A pump that never starts has a power, float or motor problem, while one that runs but moves little water may be blocked or may be letting water fall back through a check valve that is not holding. If it starts and stops every few seconds, suspect the float or the discharge line. Ask which of these it is before you accept a quote.
What sump pump work costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes
Our estimate for a sump pump in Michigan is $400 to $2,675 installed. It is a model, not a quote, built from national published ranges and adjusted for what Michigan plumbers are paid; its low end is held at the median of the one Michigan company price we have. Permit fees vary by city and change each fiscal year, so none is added, and the rows below show what two cities charge.
| Item | Figure | What it is |

Repair the pump, replace it, or add a backup
How long a pump lasts is not something a Michigan source puts a number on, so we give none. Ask instead how often it runs, whether it has failed before and whether it has a backup. A switch, valve or clogged intake is a repair, while a failing motor, or a pump that has already let water onto the floor, is a reason to discuss replacement and a backup.
- The fault is a stuck float, a check valve or a blocked discharge.
- The pump has run without trouble and only failed once, in an outage.
- The motor is noisy, hot or running constantly with no drop in water.
- The pump has already let water onto the floor.
Why spring and big storms decide when a Michigan sump pump fails
The Michigan State Police flood facts sheet says many floods follow winter snow melt or heavy spring rain, and it advises a sump pump and sewer backflow valves. The National Weather Service adds that you should make sure the pump works and consider a backup.
Metro Detroit has seen what a single storm can do. On August 11, 2014, 4 to 6 inches of rain fell over about four hours in Wayne, southern Oakland and Macomb counties. On June 25 to 27, 2021, 3 to 5 inches fell widely, with some places getting 6 to 8, and flooded basements were reported mainly in Wayne and Washtenaw counties.
For a repair call, the point in the State Police brochure is that basement flooding occurs more often from sump pumps failing in power outages than from sewer water backing up, and a new pump on household power alone will not change that. The spring sump pump checklist covers testing before the thaw.
Where a Michigan sump pump is allowed to discharge
Sump discharge is governed by city ordinance and state guidance, not by one statewide rule, so be wary of a page that quotes one. Midland has made it illegal since 1987 to connect a footing drain to the sanitary sewer, and most Michigan cities prohibit sump water in the sanitary system in some form.
EGLE's sump guidance, as summarised in a search result, prefers discharge to the ground without ponding on a neighbour's land and says to keep sump water out of septic systems; confirm with EGLE or your building department. Sterling Heights, per 2024 engineering standards read through a search summary, expects a 3-inch sump outlet to a storm sewer.
When a sump pump problem is an emergency
- Water is rising in the pit and the pump will not run.
- Water is already on the basement floor during a storm.
- The pump runs without stopping and the water level is not dropping.
- Water is near the electrical panel or outlets. Stay out of the water.
- A pump that is loud but still empties the pit.
- A discharge pipe that needs rerouting, in dry weather.
What to check before you call about a sump pump
- Check that the pump is plugged in and the outlet has power. A tripped breaker looks exactly like a dead pump.
- Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit and watch whether the pump starts and the level drops.
- Look at where the discharge pipe ends outside. A pipe blocked or frozen shut will keep a good pump running with nowhere to send the water.
Permits and licensing for sump pump work in Michigan
Michigan's permit rule exempts only repairs to the working parts of a faucet or valve and clearing stoppages, with no alteration of existing piping. A new pit, new discharge piping or a storm tie-in alters piping, so assume a permit. Whether a like-for-like pump swap needs one is a question for your building department.
Only a licensed master or journey plumber may do plumbing under the Skilled Trades Regulation Act, with exemptions that include a homeowner working on their own single-family home with a permit. Ask for a license number and check the LARA lookup.
Some cities help pay for the work. Grand Rapids has paid up to $4,500 for eligible footing drain disconnections, though the cap may have changed. East Lansing reimburses backflow equipment up to $3,000 a property, with a city permit and passed inspection. Both come from search summaries, so confirm with the city: Grand Rapids, East Lansing.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

A tool for this job
Know your shutoff
The first useful thing to do in a plumbing emergency is to stop the water, and the worst time to learn where the valve is is during one. Pick the situation and read the steps. Test the valve on a calm day, and tell everyone in the house where it is.

How much does it cost for a sump pump installation in Michigan?
Our estimate is $400 to $2,675 installed, and it is a model, not a quote. The cost table shows how it is built, the plumber wage and published permit fees (Sterling Heights $25 for a sump, Dearborn $15, Flint $140 for a sump line). Ask for a written price naming the pump, check valve, discharge work and permit.
Is a sump pump a red flag when buying a house?
Not by itself: the State Police and the National Weather Service both recommend one. What matters is whether it works, has a backup and where it discharges. Our guide on buying a house with a sump pump lists the questions.
Can a sump pump discharge into the sanitary sewer in Michigan?
Most Michigan cities prohibit it, though no single statewide rule covers it. Midland has barred footing drain connections to the sanitary sewer since 1987. Ask your building department where yours may go.
Does homeowners insurance cover a sump pump failure in Michigan?
Not automatically: the state's insurance regulator says water and sewer back-up is not automatically covered under a homeowners or renters policy, and flood damage typically needs flood insurance. DIFS advises describing the loss to your insurer as water damage, not just flood. Ask your agent before anything happens.
Why did my sump pump fail during a storm?
The most common cause the State Police name is a power outage: flooding occurs more often from pumps failing in outages than from sewer backing up. A float, check valve or discharge fault can also be the cause.
Who is liable if a sump pump failure floods my basement?
In general you are, if the water came through your own sump or building drain. Michigan's law on sewage disposal system events excludes backups where a substantial cause is a connection on the property such as a sump, building drain or downspout. That is a summary, not legal advice. See sewer backup after heavy rain.
