What gas line work covers in a house
Gas line work covers the piping, valves and fittings that carry gas to an appliance such as a range, dryer, grill hookup, fireplace, water heater or standby generator. Michigan's rule on mechanical contractor classifications defines fuel gas piping as the installation of piping, valves and fittings from the outlet of the point of delivery to the outlet of the appliance shut off valve.
The rules get specific: LARA's mechanical FAQ says the gas piping for a standby generator needs a mechanical license with the HVAC equipment classification.
What gas line work costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes
Our estimate for gas line work in Michigan is $480 to $1,650 per job, with a typical $75 permit fee included. It is a model, not a quote, built from national published ranges and adjusted for what Michigan plumbers are paid. We did not find a published Michigan fee for the mechanical permit that gas piping needs, so the plumbing application fee stands in for it. One Michigan company publishes gas line prices, shown in its own row. Ask for a written price that lists the pipe, the connection, the permit and the pressure test separately.

Which Michigan license covers gas piping
Michigan's rule R 339.5161 lists the mechanical specialty classifications, and three concern gas: LP distribution piping, fuel gas piping, and fuel gas piping and venting. Gas piping licensing therefore sits under the mechanical contractor rules rather than the plumbing license alone.
No single statute we have read says whether a plumber or a mechanical contractor may run a gas line, so we will not say any plumber can. LARA's mechanical permit page says a mechanical contractor license is required for HVAC equipment and ductwork, the Mechanical Code covers appliances that burn gas, liquid or solid fuel, and an owner who occupies a single-family home may do the work without a license.
Ask any company for its license number and classification, then check both with the LARA lookup.
Replacing a gas water heater takes two licenses
LARA's mechanical FAQ says replacing a gas water heater requires a Michigan mechanical license (HVAC equipment, or gas piping and venting) and a Michigan plumbing contractor's license, with a mechanical permit and a plumbing permit. Part of that answer reached us through a search summary, so confirm it with LARA before you rely on it.

Digging for a new line in Michigan: MISS DIG first
If the work means digging, call MISS DIG at 811 or use its website first; the service is free. Michigan's damage prevention rule asks for notice at least three business days before you dig. A search summary of MCL 460.725 puts it at 72 hours excluding non-business hours, and not more than 14 calendar days ahead; confirm at missdig811.org. Homeowners who dig count as excavators.
The advice to "call the day before" is wrong. If a digger does hit a gas line, Consumers Energy says to call 800-477-5050, the same number as for a smell of gas.
If you smell gas
- You smell natural gas (a rotten egg odor): go to a safe place, call 911, then call your gas utility.
- You hit or nicked a gas line while digging.
- You want a new line for a range, dryer or grill and nothing smells.
What to do before you call about a gas line
- If you smell gas, stop reading and follow the steps above.
- Do not relight a pilot yourself. DTE's safety page says to contact a licensed professional if the pilot flame of an appliance goes out, and the professional should relight it.
- Write down which appliance the line is for and where it will sit.
- Ask each company for its license number and classification, and ask whether the quote includes the permit and a pressure test.
Permits and inspection for gas work
Gas piping and appliance work go through a mechanical permit, separate from the plumbing permit. LARA's FAQ says a homeowner may pull a permit and install a heating system in their own single-family home if they affirm ownership and occupancy and get the inspection. We do not recommend doing gas work yourself. Before you hire anyone, call your building department and ask whether the job needs a plumbing permit too.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

Questions people ask
Who can install a gas line in Michigan?
Gas piping falls under the mechanical license rules, so confirm the license class on LARA. R 339.5161 lists fuel gas piping among the mechanical classifications. No statute we have read settles plumber versus mechanical contractor, so ask for the license number and its classification.
Do I need a permit for a gas line in Michigan?
Gas work generally needs a mechanical permit and an inspection. A homeowner who lives in a single-family home may pull one for that home, but we do not recommend doing it yourself.
What do I do if I smell gas in Michigan?
DTE's number is (800) 947-5000 and Consumers Energy's is 800-477-5050. Do not use phones, switches or flame inside the house.
Is (800) 477-4747 the DTE gas number?
The DTE gas leak hotline is (800) 947-5000. Pages that post the electric number as the gas number are wrong.
Can any plumber replace a gas water heater in Michigan?
It also says a mechanical permit and a plumbing permit are required. Confirm with LARA, then see our water heater replacement page.
Should I relight my own pilot light?
If you smell gas, leave and call the utility instead. Our pilot light guide covers the causes.
How much does gas line installation cost in Michigan?
Our estimate is $480 to $1,650 per job, and it is a model, not a quote. The cost table shows the estimate beside the Michigan company price and the plumber wage. Get a written price that lists pipe, connection, permit and pressure test.
Do I call MISS DIG before a new gas line?
Call 811 at least three business days ahead. MISS DIG is free, and homeowners who dig count as excavators.
