What a cable, a hydro jet and a camera each do
A cable, sometimes called an auger or a snake, is fed through the drain until it breaks up the plug. A hydro jet scours the inside of the pipe with high-pressure water instead. The camera clears nothing. It goes in on a flexible rod and shows what's in the pipe and where, which is how a repeat clog gets told apart from a cracked or sagging section.
Ask which method the quote covers and whether a camera run is part of it, so you know whether anyone will have looked inside the pipe before you pay.
What drain cleaning costs in California: three estimates
Where the clog sits sets the price. Our estimates are $170 to $400 per job, one fixture drain, $230 to $915 per job, main line, and $340 to $1,600 per job, main line, evening or weekend, built from 2 national published ranges and scaled for California plumber pay. They're estimates, not quotes, and none of them includes repairing a broken pipe.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, one fixture drain, not a quote | $170 to $400 per job, one fixture drain | A sink, tub, shower or toilet drain cleared with a hand or machine cable. Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the California plumber wage ratio (1.14). Basis: no state company sample (no counted California company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Estimated range, main line or sewer clean-out, not a quote | $230 to $915 per job, main line | A blockage in the main line, cleared through the clean-out or a roof vent, during business hours. Built from 3 national published ranges, adjusted by the California plumber wage ratio (1.14). Basis: no state company sample (no counted California company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Estimated range, main line or clean-out, evening or weekend call, not a quote | $340 to $1,600 per job, main line, evening or weekend | The same main-line clog, but the plumber comes outside business hours; holiday rates are not in the row. Built from 3 national published ranges and 2 published after-hours factors, adjusted by the California plumber wage ratio (1.14). Basis: no state company sample (no counted California company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Plumber wage, California mean | $39.58 an hour | Mean pay for a California plumber (BLS, May 2025). A company's rate on the bill is a separate number. |
Estimated ranges, one row per scope. Built from national published ranges (7 sources in all, 2 to 5 per row), adjusted by California's plumber wage ratio to the US (1.14, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. California plumbing companies that publish a price get their own rows, apart from the estimate. Full method. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.
Clean it again, or repair the pipe?
The camera footage decides it, so ask to watch it, or to have it saved, before you agree to anything past cleaning.
- The pipe looks whole on camera and the plug is hair, grease or paper.
- A single fixture drains slowly and nothing else does.
- The footage shows a crack, an offset joint or a section that's caved in.
- The line clogs again soon after each cleaning.
- The yard has a soggy patch, or there's a sewage smell outdoors.
Is it one drain, or the line the whole house shares?
A single slow sink, with every other drain running, points at that fixture's trap or branch. Two slow fixtures, a gurgle from the floor drain, or water rising in the lowest tub when the washer empties all point farther down, past where cabling one branch can reach.
A line that backs up again within weeks of being cleared is the case for the camera. If the footage shows a crack, an offset joint or a collapsed section, the job has turned into a sewer line repair.
Which part of the sewer pipe is yours to fix
In Los Angeles the owner is responsible for the whole lateral, upper and lower, out to the middle of the street. San Diego calls the entire length to the main under the street private property and puts maintenance on the owner. Fresno does the same. Its owner's share runs under the sidewalk and street to the public main.
Other cities divide the pipe differently, so before you pay to clear a line that keeps backing up, ask your city or sewer agency which section is yours.
Drain problems that need a call now
- Sewage is coming up into the house through a floor drain, a tub or a toilet.
- Every fixture in the house is slow, or several are backing up together.
- The backed-up water is heading for the electrical panel.
- A single sink or tub draining slowly, with the others fine.
- A toilet that a few plunges clear.
Steps to try on your own first
- Take the stopper out of a bathroom sink or tub and lift the hair out with your fingers.
- Block the overflow and work a cup plunger over a sink or tub; a toilet takes a flange plunger.
- Set a bucket under the sink trap, unscrew it, and look inside for the plug.
- Quit once a second fixture is slow too, because the plug is then past anything a plunger reaches and the job needs a cable machine.
Is a permit needed to clear a drain?
CSLB's pages don't say whether clearing a stoppage needs a permit. They do say a structure can't be repaired without one and that code requirements vary between cities and counties, so ask your building department before you count on either answer.
Once the camera shows a failed pipe that has to be replaced, the permit and license questions are the ones on the sewer line page.
Ask for the license number before any work starts and look it up on CSLB's Check a License page, which shows whether the license is active and any complaint disclosure.
Questions people ask
How do I clear a slow bathroom or kitchen sink?
Pull the stopper, lift out the hair, then plunge with the overflow blocked. If the sink's still slow, unscrew the trap over a bucket and check it. When a second fixture slows down too, stop and call.
What does clearing a main sewer line cost in California?
Our model puts it at $230 to $915 per job, main line, and $340 to $1,600 per job, main line, evening or weekend for an evening or weekend call. Those come from national ranges scaled for California pay, so they're estimates, not quotes.
Who pays for a blocked sewer lateral?
Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno put the lateral on the property owner. Some cities share part of it, and the sewer line page sets out how San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Long Beach split the pipe. For any other address, your city or sewer agency has the answer.
Is a permit needed for drain cleaning in California?
CSLB's pages don't address stoppages, and the board says code requirements differ between cities and counties. One call to the building department settles it for your address.
Can a company that cleans drains work without a CSLB license?
The license law doesn't apply to a job whose total is under $1,000 and that needs no building permit (B&P 7048). Anyone who advertises as a contractor or employs workers loses that exemption, and a job can't be split into smaller contracts to stay under the limit. Look the company up on CSLB's Check a License page before you pay.
