What counts as gas line work in a home
It covers running a new branch to a range, dryer, fireplace or grill, extending or moving an existing line, and fixing a leak at a joint or connector. Ask whether the new piping will be pressure-tested before the appliance goes on, and whether the city inspects it.
Gas earthquake valves appear in the C-36 description too, which lists their maintenance alongside gas control valves. If your house has an earthquake shutoff valve, ask whether the job touches it.
What gas line work costs in California
Gas line work comes to $625 to $1,875 per job on our model, as an estimate and not a quote, built from 2 national published ranges with a California pay adjustment. With no published mechanical permit fee to use, the model takes the plumbing permit fee instead.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $625 to $1,875 per job | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the California plumber wage ratio (1.14) plus a typical permit fee ($190). California company prices are shown separately. Basis: no state company sample (no counted California company price for this job), national estimate only. |
| Plumber wage, California mean | $39.58 an hour | California plumbers' mean hourly wage from BLS (May 2025). It's pay, and a gas job is billed by the company. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (2 sources), adjusted by California's plumber wage ratio to the US (1.14, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. California plumbing companies that publish a price get their own rows, apart from the estimate. We have no counted California company price for this job, so the range is our national estimate alone. Full method. Prices as of Oct 23, 2026.
Which California license covers gas piping
Water and gas piping from the owner's side of the meter is C-36 work, along with "all gas appliances, flues and gas connections". Forced warm air units are excluded. Before the company starts, check its number and class on CSLB's lookup, and read any complaint disclosure.
Business and Professions Code 7028 makes contracting without a license a misdemeanor. B&P 7044 exempts an owner who personally improves their own property, and CSLB warns homeowners about anyone who tries to talk them into owner-builder status to save money.
Replacing a gas water heater: the class and the straps
C-36 lists both "installation of any type of equipment to heat water" and gas connections. Under Health and Safety Code 19211 the heater has to be strapped, braced or anchored against earthquake motion, so ask to see the straps priced.
Permits, rebates and the estimate tiers for the heater are on the replacement page.
Digging for a new line: the 811 notice comes first
Except in an emergency, Government Code 4216.2 requires the excavator to notify the regional notification center at least two working days, and no more than 14 calendar days, before digging. The day of the call doesn't count, the dig area must be outlined in white beforehand, and a ticket is good for 28 days.
Dial 811 for USA North 811 in Northern California or DigAlert in Southern California. Close to a marked line, the exact spot has to be found with hand tools before power equipment goes in (Gov. Code 4216.4). A knowing and willful violation can cost up to $50,000 in civil penalties, and up to $100,000 if it damages a gas pipeline and causes a release (Gov. Code 4216.6).
A gas smell comes first
- There's a smell of gas: get outside, then call 911 and the gas utility.
- A shovel or a machine has hit a gas line.
- A new line for a range, dryer or grill, planned, with no gas smell anywhere.
Before you book gas line work
- If there's any smell of gas, stop here and follow the steps in the box above.
- Decide which appliance the line will feed and where it'll stand.
- Get each company's license number and class, and ask if its price includes the permit and a pressure test.
- Don't let anyone dig until the 811 ticket is in place.
Permit and inspection for gas piping
Ask the building department which permit a gas line needs and whether it inspects the piping. CSLB says the building official issues the permit for altering a structure and that requirements vary by city and county, so the department's own fee schedule gives the cost.
Ask for the license number before any work starts and look it up on CSLB's Check a License page, which shows whether the license is active and any complaint disclosure.
