What a plumber does when a softener goes in
A softener sits on the cold water line where it enters the house, so the work starts at the main shutoff. The installer cuts into the supply pipe, fits a bypass valve, sets the tank and brine tank, and connects the drain that carries regeneration water away.
Ask about the drain, because regeneration water has to end up somewhere your city allows, and tell the company up front if you are on septic (see the septic note below).
On licensing, MCL 339.6107(2) lists domestic water treatment equipment among the exemptions to the plumbing license requirement, as long as the work is permitted. The permit itself is covered below.
What a water softener install costs in Michigan: estimates, not quotes
Our estimate for a water softener install in Michigan is $450 to $6,500 installed, with a typical $75 permit fee included. It is a model, not a quote, and the band is wide because the national published ranges it starts from are wide. One Michigan company publishes a price for water quality work, shown in its own row, and the table adds two city permit fees.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $450 to $6,500 installed | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan plumber wage ratio (1.07) plus a typical permit fee ($75). Michigan company prices are shown separately. |
| Published by 1 Michigan plumbing company, collected Oct 19, 2026 | Water quality work starting at $1,200 | One Michigan company publishes this; the page does not price a softener on its own. Published prices, not quotes. |
| Plumber wage, Michigan mean | $37.14 an hour | What Michigan plumbers are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| Water treatment device permit, Sterling Heights | $25, plus $55 application | 2026-2027 fee chart. |
| Softener or conditioner permit, Flint | $160, no base fee | FY27 adopted fee schedule. |
Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (2 sources), adjusted by Michigan's plumber wage ratio to the US (1.07, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. Where Michigan companies publish prices we show them separately. Published company prices for this job: 1 Michigan company, read Oct 19, 2026. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
Repair or replace an older softener
Softener lifespan has no Michigan source, so we give no age. Ask the company to price the repair and the new unit separately, and to say what the repair does not fix.
- The problem is one part, such as a valve or the control head.
- The tank leaks.
Hardness in Michigan depends on whose water you drink
Utility reports vary widely, so the first question for any softener quote is what hardness the company measured at your tap. Hardness is reported in milligrams per litre (mg/L as calcium carbonate); divide by 17.1 to get grains per gallon, the unit softener labels use.
Grand Rapids draws from Lake Michigan and reported a 2025 plant average of 142 mg/L, with a range of 126 to 164, which is 8.3 grains per gallon. The Great Lakes Water Authority plants that supply Detroit and most of its suburbs ran lower: Springwells 97 to 130 mg/L with an average of 106, Northeast 96 to 120 with an average of 105, and Lake Huron 96 to 130 with an average of 105 (Southfield's 2025 report prints all three). Warren's 2025 report shows 105 mg/L on average. Detroit's own report was not readable to us, so the GLWA figures stand in for the city.
Sterling Heights prints no hardness figure in its own report, but it buys from the GLWA Lake Huron plant, so that plant's 105 mg/L average is the nearest proxy. Saginaw says its water is about 110 mg/L, and Midland calls its water moderately hard at an average of 104 mg/L, roughly six grains per gallon. East Lansing's plant water runs 100 to 125 mg/L.
Kalamazoo is the outlier. In 2016 WMUK quoted the city's public services department saying its water averages about 20 grains per gallon, more than twice Grand Rapids. That is a 2016 news quote rather than a current report, so read the city's latest before you buy anything.
Lansing and Ann Arbor soften at the plant
Lansing Board of Water and Light pulls from wells and runs the water through conditioning plants that remove about 80 percent of the hardness. Its 2025 treated water was typically 98 mg/L. Ann Arbor softens at its plant too, and its 2025 distribution average was 126 mg/L, with a range of 74 to 180.
In either city the water reaching your tap is already softened once, so a second stage at home is a judgement call, and no Michigan source we use measures what it adds. None ties hardness to water heater life or softener lifespan either, so this page gives no lifespans.
Where the regeneration water goes in Michigan
EGLE's residential sump pump guidance, which we know only through a search summary, says not to connect sump or softener discharge to a septic system. Ask your county health department before the install. On city sewer, the local building department sets the drain rules.
When a softener problem is an emergency
- Water is spraying from the softener's connections, or pooling near the outlet that powers it.
- Spots on glass and fixtures.
What to do before you call about hard water
- Find your utility's latest annual water quality report and look for total hardness.
- Compare it with the Michigan figures above. Lansing and Ann Arbor water is already softened at the plant.
- On a private well there is no utility report, so have the water tested before choosing equipment.
- Tell any company that quotes you if you are on septic or city sewer, and ask which permit it will pull.
Permits for a water softener in Michigan
LARA says plumbing work needs a permit before it starts and exempts only repairs to the working parts of a faucet or valve and clearing stoppages. A new softener cuts into the supply line, so we treat it as permit work. The license exemption in MCL 339.6107(2) applies when a permit and inspection are in place.
A licensed plumbing contractor or a homeowner doing their own plumbing pulls the permit, per LARA. Your city or township issues it. Call the local office before you buy the unit.
Ask for the license number and check it on the LARA lookup before any work starts.

Questions people ask
How much does water softener installation cost in Michigan?
Our estimate is $450 to $6,500 installed, and it is a model, not a quote. The cost table shows wages, two permit fees and the Michigan company price beside it. Ask for a written price that separates equipment, labor and the permit.
Do I need a permit to install a water softener in Michigan?
In general yes, because the install alters your supply piping. LARA exempts only faucet and valve working parts and clearing stoppages, and Sterling Heights and Flint both list softener fees.
Does a water softener need a licensed plumber in Michigan?
The state license law exempts domestic water treatment equipment when it is permitted (MCL 339.6107(2)). The permit is a separate matter. Check any installer's license on the LARA lookup.
Is Michigan water hard?
Grand Rapids averaged 142 mg/L in 2025, GLWA plants serving the Detroit area ran about 96 to 130, and Midland is about 104. Read your own utility's report.
Do I need a softener if I live in Lansing or Ann Arbor?
Lansing's treated water was typically 98 mg/L in 2025 and Ann Arbor's averaged 126. No Michigan source we use measures what a home softener adds on top.
How do I convert mg/L to grains per gallon?
Grand Rapids' 142 mg/L comes to about 8.3 grains per gallon, and GLWA's 105 mg/L to about 6.1.
Can a water softener drain into a septic system?
That comes from a summary of its sump pump discharge guidance, so confirm with your county health department before the install.
